What a growth action plan actually is

Owner mapping a 90-day growth plan on a wall calendar

A growth action plan is not a strategy deck, not a vision statement, and not a to-do list. It's the shortest document that tells your team what you're betting on this quarter, who owns each bet, and what will tell you it worked. Everything else — the deck, the vision, the backlog — is context. The plan is the decision.

The three characteristics of a real growth action plan

If any of the three is missing, you have a document — not a plan.

  • It's short — one page, three bets. If it takes ten pages to explain, no one will execute it.
  • It's specific — every bet has an owner, a KPI, and a deadline before the end of the quarter.
  • It's honest — it names what you're NOT doing this quarter, not just what you are.
The most valuable line in a growth plan is often 'this quarter we are not doing X.' Explicit trade-offs are what stop the plan from being quietly re-negotiated in every hallway conversation.
