The Google Business Profile Hygiene Checklist for Solo Owners

7 min read Solo owners and operators who set up their Google Business Profile years ago and haven't touched it since.

A neglected Google Business Profile is the most common invisible tax on a small business. Everything else in your marketing gets filtered through it. Ten focused minutes here can move more calls than a week of ad tweaking.

The categories are more important than you think

Primary category is a strong ranking signal. Secondary categories broaden the queries you can appear for. Most solo owners pick one and never revisit it. Check that your primary category is the most specific accurate option, and add secondary categories for every service you actually offer.

Services and attributes

The services list is where Google matches your profile to long-tail queries. Add every service you deliver, using the language customers use. Attributes ("appointment required," "wheelchair accessible," "identifies as women-owned") shape both ranking and the filter chips customers use.

Photos, quietly

Businesses that add photos monthly get more direction requests and calls than those that don't. Add a handful each month — interior, exterior, team, work-in-progress, a completed job. Nothing staged.

Q&A: seed it, then own it

Anyone can ask a question on your profile. Anyone can answer. Seed the top five questions your customers actually ask, answer them yourself, and turn on notifications so you catch new ones before a stranger does.

Posts and updates

A post every 2–4 weeks is enough to signal an active profile. Announcements, offers, seasonal notes. Consistency matters more than volume.

Your Google Business Profile is the front door of the modern business. Keep it swept.
